Dental Crown Problems and Solutions

April 09, 2023

Dental crowns in Boca Raton are a true work of art in dentistry. They offer a versatile, long-lasting solution for a wide range of dental problems, and they can be customized to meet your unique needs.

Whether you’re looking to restore a damaged tooth or enhance the appearance of your smile, dental crowns can help you achieve the beautiful, healthy smile you’ve always wanted. While crowns are generally safe and effective, they have some potential drawbacks. What are the most common crown problems, and how do people solve them?

Dental Crown Issues and Remedies

Discomfort or Sensitivity

You shouldn’t experience discomfort with your crowns. However, some patients complain of sensitivity or pain. The pain could stem from tooth irritation during the crown placement, or it could be that the crown is placed too high, causing it to hit your teeth.

The solution is to notify your dentist immediately. If the problem is crown height, your dentist will make the necessary adjustments, and if it’s sensitive, you may be asked to use a desensitizing toothpaste or take pain relievers.

Chipped or Cracked Crown

Ironically, even if a crown protects a chipped or cracked tooth, the artificial crown itself can also get chipped and cracked. Despite their durability, dental crowns can get damaged due to wear and tear, facial trauma, and unhealthy dental habits like teeth grinding and fingernail biting.

If you notice a chip or a crack in your dental crown, you should return to the dental office to have it checked. Based on the severity of the damage, your dentist will determine whether the crown needs to be repaired or replaced.

Unsteady Crown

Your crown can fall off due to a problem with the underlying tooth, or the cement that holds it in place has worn off. If this happens, call your dentist immediately.

Your dentist will examine the crown and determine what’s causing the problem before recommending an appropriate treatment. The crown can be re-cemented, but additional treatments may be required if the underlying tooth is damaged.

Allergic Reaction

Although rare, some people can develop an allergic reaction to the materials used in making crowns, such as porcelain and metal alloy. During your consultation, your dentist will ask you to be wary of signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling, redness, or itching in your mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms mentioned, call your dentist ASAP.

Your dentist will evaluate the crown and may recommend changing it to a different crown material. But, if you develop a severe reaction, the crown may need to be removed and replaced with a different dental restoration

Gum Irritation

In some cases, a dental crown may cause gum irritation or inflammation. It can result from the crown being too close to the gum line or not fitting properly. If you experience gum irritation, notify your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist may need to adjust the crown to get a proper fit and relieve the pressure on your gums.
