Dental Implant Pain: Should I Worry?

September 02, 2022

If you’ve had your teeth removed, you can depend on dental implants in Boca Raton to replace them. Dental implants offer a stable foundation for your artificial teeth restoring your smile and oral function to normal.

However, the procedure isn’t completely pain-free. You can expect to experience mild discomfort after the surgery, but it should resolve in the next couple of days. If the pain intensifies, it will warrant a visit to the dental office. Severe pain isn’t part of the recovery process. But how do you know if you’re dealing with something serious?

Is Dental Implant Pain Normal?

What Can You Expect During Dental Implant Surgery?

During dental implant surgery, the dentist opens your gum tissue to expose the jawbone underneath. Once the jawbone is visible, they will drill holes within them. The holes are where the dental implants are placed. These titanium screw-shaped rods are your replacements for your missing tooth roots.

You will be under local anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain during the surgery. However, once the anesthesia wears off, you will feel slight discomfort, but it can be managed by taking pain medications. If the pain lasts more than a few days or intensifies after several days, you’ll need immediate treatment.

What Does It Mean If You Experience Throbbing Pain After Surgery?

A throbbing pain is normal after surgery. Some patients even describe it as sharp pain. It should dwindle as days go by. In fact, you can manage the pain by taking over-the-counter pain medications. But you should not discount the possibility of complications post-op. Dental implant complications can also add to the pain. You must communicate with your oral surgeon, so your case can be reviewed and the cause of the pain determined.

Incision Line Opening

One of the most common post-op complications is the incision line opening. When this happens, you may feel pain. Usually, your oral surgeon will advise you to rinse your mouth with a chlorhexidine rinse or prescribe you antibiotics to prevent an infection. If the pain persists, you may need additional treatments.

Implant Not Fusing With Your Jawbone

Did you know that you could experience pain or discomfort if your dental implants fail to fuse with your bone tissues? If this is what’s causing the pain, your oral surgeon may have to remove the implant and reattach it later.

Infection

Just like any other surgery, infection is a possible risk. It happens when bacteria enter the surgical site and prevent proper healing.

What Are Other Signs of Dental Implant Complications?

Besides pain, there are other signs you should look out for after surgery. Examples of symptoms that indicate dental implant complications are fever, nausea, vomiting, worsening swelling, and excessive bleeding.
