Denture Habits You Need to Break

September 12, 2022

Do you know what’s to love about dentures in Boca Raton? Besides their affordability, today’s dentures are manufactured to mimic the physical features of real teeth so you can smile confidently, knowing that they blend seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth, giving you a beautiful and even smile.

Initially, your dentures will feel weird, but as you continue to wear them, they eventually become a part of you, and you won’t even notice it.

Unfortunately, some people get too comfortable wearing dentures that they forget the proper way to care for them. Consequently, they end up wearing uncomfortable and ill-fitting dentures, or worse, they could prematurely damage their dentures.

Bad Habits on Denture Care That You Need to Break

You Don’t Wear Them Regularly

It may come as a shock, but many people don’t want to put in the effort to wear dentures. Dentures are meant to be worn regularly. They could get warped or deformed if you keep leaving them out to dry. Ideally, if you are not going to wear them, you should soak them in a denture solution.

Not wearing your denture is not an option if it’s new. Your dentist will inform you to wear them regularly so your mouth can quickly adjust to the new device. Wearing your dentures will also shorten the adjustment phase.

You Don’t Take Them Out When Sleeping

While you are advised to wear your dentures regularly, there is also a time for you to take them out. You need to give your gum tissues and mouth a chance to relax from the pressure exerted by your dentures. The best time to take them off is when you are about to go to bed. Besides, you won’t be showing off your smile in your sleep!

What could happen if you forget to take it off for more than eight hours while sleeping? Keep in mind that your mouth is teeming with bacteria, and if you leave your denture in, it could predispose you to infection.

You Don’t Clean Your Denture

Another mistake people make is forgetting to clean their dentures. Many only take time to clean their dentures when scheduled for a dental appointment.

If you don’t clean your dentures, your oral health will suffer, and it will also shorten the lifespan of your dental device. Remember that your mouth is filled with bacteria, so if you don’t clean them, expect worn and foul-smelling dentures.

You’re Not Cleaning Your Dentures Properly

Aside from the frequency, you should also ensure that if you clean your dentures, it must be the proper way; otherwise, you might accidentally scratch or damage them. Some of the mistakes people make is using the wrong kind of toothpaste.

Your dentures aren’t scratch-resistant, so if you choose abrasive toothpaste, you might scratch them. It’s also essential to select a toothbrush that has soft bristles. Hard-bristled toothbrushes can leave dents on your dentures, allowing plaque to build up on these surfaces.
