Saving Your Tooth: The Top Reasons Why Root Canal Treatment is Necessary

May 01, 2023

A root canal in Boca Raton, also known as endodontic treatment, is a common dental procedure necessary to save an infected or damaged tooth. The process involves removing the damaged or infected tissue from inside the tooth and then cleaning, shaping, and filling the space to prevent future infection. Why do endodontists order root canal therapy?

Why Is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

  • Decay and Damage

One of the common reasons why a tooth may require root canal treatment is due to tooth decay and cavities. When decay and cavities are left untreated, they can spread to the tooth’s innermost layer, called the pulp.

The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues that help the tooth grow and develop. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause pain and sensitivity and may require root canal treatment to remove the damaged tissue and save the tooth.

Besides decay, trauma or injury to the tooth can also damage the pulp. This can occur from a sports injury, car accident, or fall. When the pulp is damaged, your endodontist may require root canal treatment to stop further damage or infection.

  • Infection and Inflammation

Pulpitis and pulp necrosis are two conditions that can cause infection and inflammation of the pulp. Pulpitis is an inflammation of the pulp caused by decay or trauma to the tooth. Symptoms of pulpitis may include pain, sensitivity, and swelling.

If left untreated, pulpitis can lead to pulp necrosis or the death of the pulp tissue. Pulp necrosis can cause the tooth to become discolored and may require root canal treatment to remove the infected tissue, prevent further infection, and save the tooth from extraction.

  • Other Causes of Infection

In addition to decay and trauma, several other causes of infection may require root canal treatment. These include cracked teeth, gum disease, and deep restorations. Cracked teeth can allow bacteria to enter the pulp and cause infection.

Gum disease can also lead to infection, as the bacteria can travel from the gums to the tooth roots. Deep restorations placed close to the pulp can also cause inflammation and infection.

How Is Root Canal Treatment Done?

If you are experiencing symptoms of infection or inflammation, your dentist may recommend root canal treatment. The procedure involves several steps and may require multiple appointments depending on the severity of the infection.

During the first appointment, the dentist will numb the tooth and make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp. They will then use small, specialized instruments to remove the damaged or infected tissue from the tooth’s root canals. The dentist will then clean and shape the canals to prepare them for filling.

At the next appointment, the dentist will fill the canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. This material seals the canals and prevents further infection. The dentist will then place a filling or crown on the tooth to protect it and restore its function.
