What to Eat When Getting New Dentures

Your ability to chew and bite is compromised when you have missing teeth, making regular meal consumption more challenging than usual. Dentures in Boca Raton restore lost teeth’s strength, look, and function. You no longer need to be concerned about this because most, if not all, dental clinics provide restorative oral procedures such as dentures.   

However, just because you have dentures does not guarantee that everything will suddenly improve. Like any other treatment, adjusting and fitting your dentures to your gums will take a few days. To avoid causing any harm to your tooth replacement, you must be particularly cautious with your food during this period.

Getting Used to Your New Dentures   

When you initially obtain dentures, your gums will need to acclimatize to chewing and biting. It’s also possible that any dental procedure you had to remove natural teeth left your gums painful. We’ve compiled a list of meal suggestions to help you get through your first few meals with dentures.   

Food Tips for Those with New Dentures 

Soft Food 

When wearing new dentures, the first rule of thumb is to eat slowly. Begin by eating soft meals that don’t need a lot of chewing. When you consume red meat, crackers, raw carrots, or anything crunchy, you’re putting unnecessary stress on your gum tissues, which can lead to discomfort and inflammation.   

Your gums may also be uncomfortable at this time due to any procedures you have to have done to remove damaged or broken teeth. Dentists recommend that you eat soft foods to help with the healing process:  

  • Oatmeal  
  • Gelatin dessert  
  • Applesauce  
  • Mashed potatoes  
  • Clear broth  
  • Creamed soup  
  • Cereal with warm milk  
  • Juice  
  • Yogurt  
  • Pudding  
  • Baked, poached, or broiled fish  

Take it gently with your new dentures. Follow these basic self-help instructions until your gums adjust to the denture plate:   

  • Make sure the temperature is correct. Hot meals should be avoided since they might burn your tongue. Because of the insulating effect of the dentures, you won’t be able to evaluate temperatures as effectively. Before placing hot items in your mouth, test them on your lips.     
  • Spicy meals should be avoided. Burning or stinging might occur if you have sores or inflammation.   
  • Begin with a gentle mechanical diet. Applesauce, puddings, prepared cereals, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes are examples of pureed meals that deliver nourishment without damaging your gums or hurting your jaw muscles.    

Transitioning Back to Solid Foods   

When you’re ready to move on to solid meals, make sure you take them in small pieces. You should also know how you chew and how quickly you consume food. It is often preferable to eat when seated and leave enough time for a meal. When you eat on the go, you’re more prone to experience discomfort and denture slippage as you speed through your meal.  

Your mouth will learn to adjust to the dentures within a few days, and you may begin eating more solid meals. Make sure they’re sliced into tiny pieces, so you don’t have to chew them too much. Begin by including foods such as the following:  

  • Pasta  
  • Baked beans  
  • Toast 
  • Cooked rice  
  • Cooked greens  
  • Soft bread  
  • Cooked vegetables  
  • Steamed salmon   
  • Soup with cooked vegetables and soft meats
